Anshuman Phadikar, TT, Midnapore, 16.07.23 : Trinamul activists allegedly urinated on a BJP candidate’s polling agent in West Midnapore’s Garbeta on Friday evening and thrashed him after dragging him to an office of the ruling party.
Trinamul sources on Saturday denied the allegations of their party’s role in the incident.
Local sources said Trinamul supporters were celebrating their panchayat poll victory when BJP polling agent Barun Ruidas was passing by.
“He was surrounded by rowdy party workers who asked him for money,” said an eyewitness.
“When he refused, they started thrashing him. Then they dragged him to the nearby party office. When he asked for water out of sheer exhaustion, he was urinated upon.”
The BJP worker was admitted to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on Friday night.
State BJP vice-president Samit Das visited him on Saturday.
“Trinamul unleashed terror across the state before the panchayat polls. On polling day and after the voting, our workers continue to come under attack. But because they are the ruling party, the accused are not being arrested. Trinamul workers have become so reckless that heinous acts are being committed. We will protest against this,” said Das.
West Midnapure district Trinamul coordinator and MLA Ajit Maiti denied the allegations.
“There was no malpractice in the panchayat polls in Garbeta. False charges are being brought to foment tension in the area after the BJP lost the polls.”
A police officer of Garbeta police station said the complaint of urination was being investigated.
