School, Colleges closed in Mumbai, parts of Telangana, Andhra :Heavy downpour expected

Agencies, New Delhi, July 26, 2023 : The Noida district administration has ordered all schools to remain shut in the region due to heavy rainfall. 

Noida schools for all classes have been declared holiday. Heavy rainfall continues to lash Telangana, Kerala, Maharashtra during this monsoon season. All schools up to Class 12 in Noida and Greater Noida will remain closed on Wednesday due to rain and waterlogging, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration said. 

Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received heavy rains this morning, leading to waterlogging in several areas. "Due to rains and waterlogging, District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma has ordered closure of all schools up to Class 12 for today," District Inspector of Schools Dharmveer Singh said, as per the PTI report.

Due to heavy rains and in view of the increasing water level of Yamuna river, the Noida district authorities earlier announced the closure of schools for Classes 1 to 12 on July 14. India Meteorological Department's (IMD) recently issued an orange alert in the coastal regions of Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra and informed that heavy rainfall may return to northern parts of India from July 25. The officials took the decision to close Noida schools today as the region has been receiving continuous rainfall since Tuesday.

Delhi-NCR woke up to heavy downpours on Wednesday morning, resulting in waterlogging in several areas, including the ITO, Ghaziabad, and Noida. Moderate rains, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to continue in the capital city through the day.

In Mumbai, which has been witnessing continuous showers for over a week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert, predicting a cloudy sky with heavy rains. Maharashtra’s Raigad and Ratnagiri districts have been put on red alert, with extremely heavy rainfall forecasted in the two districts.

Meanwhile, schools have been shut in several states — including parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala — owing to the ongoing monsoon situation. Here are your weather updates for today.

Yamuna level declines in Delhi, Noida schools shut
Even as Delhi saw widespread rainfall on Wednesday morning, the water level of the Yamuna fell slightly below the danger mark of 205.33 m. The water level was recorded at 205.1 m as of 10 am today, as per the Central Water Commission. It is expected to recede further to 204.9 m by 1 pm.

Amid the prevailing weather conditions, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration has announced a holiday for all schools up to class 12 in Noida and Greater Noida for the day.

Due to the rise in the water level of the Hindon River, around 350 cars were submerged in the Ecotech-3 area of Gautam Buddha Nagar on Monday. Officials said the cars belonged to the dump yard of a private company built in the floodplain of the Hindon in the Purana Sutiana village.

Monsoon to intensify in Mumbai
Schools and colleges have been shut amid the extreme weather forecast in Raigad and Ratnagiri. A primary school and an 'anganwadi’ (kindergarten) will soon be started for the 22 children who lost their parents in the landslide at Irshalwadi in Raigad district, an official said on Tuesday.  At least 27 people died in the district due to a landslide on July 19.

Meanwhile, the monsoon is expected to intensify in Mumbai today. Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD Mumbai, told The Indian Express, “A depression is expected to form over the northern Andhra and Odisha coast. This will intensify the monsoon showers in Mumbai. Therefore, we have extended the orange alert until Wednesday.”

Orange alert in Karnataka, dengue cases on the rise
An orange alert has been issued for coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka by the Met Department, Bengaluru, which has predicted heavy rains, strong winds, and lightning in various parts of the state.

"Extremely heavy rainfall activity likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Telangana during next 2 days and decrease thereafter," the IMD said in its daily bulletin.

Amid the rainy season, Karnataka has logged 4,013 cases of dengue till July 19 this year compared to 3,403 cases in the same period in 2022. The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in the district on July 26.Shimla highway blocked amid rains in Himachal.

In Himachal Pradesh, which has been suffering landslides and flooding due to heavy rains, the national highway in Shimla is blocked at two locations near Broni Nalla and Jeori amid the wet weather.

"Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Haryana & Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh during next 3 days decrease thereafter," the IMD forecast said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, schools were closed in affected areas in Himachal as well as Uttarkashi, after several houses, vehicles and roads were damaged due to a cloudburst incident on July 22.

Rains to continue in Telangana till Friday, schools get holidays
"Light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall" is very likely in Telangana till July 28, as per the national weather office.

Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao has directed the State Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy to declare holidays for all educational institutions on July 26 and 27.

Rain forecast for Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur
"Light/moderate fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya during July 26 to 29 and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on July 2 and 29. Isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on July 27 and 28," the IMD said in its morning bulletin.

Rain prediction for central India
Light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh during July 26-28 and over West Madhya Pradesh on July 26, as per the IMD.
