Panchayat polls: No women poll personnel to be deployed in Jalpaiguri dist this year
MP | 5 July 2023 : There will be no pink booths in Jalpaiguri district during this Panchayat polls. Though the State Election Commission (SEC) has approved of women polling personnel for Panchayat polls, Jalpaiguri district will not be deploying any women polling personnel. However, 800 to 900 women personnel will be deployed for the counting process.
“We will not be deploying any women polling personnel in the district for the Panchayat elections. We have adequate male polling personnel so we will not be deploying women personnel on polling day. We will not be having Pink booths,” stated Moumita Godara, District Magistrate, Jalpaiguri.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, there were 469 Pink Booths in the Jalpaiguri district. However, for the counting day, the scenario will be different. “We need around 2,800 counting personnel, 20 per cent of the number being kept in reserve. This will include around 900 women counting personnel,” added the District Magistrate.
Due to a shortage of polling personnel, the West Bengal State Election Commission has approved the deployment of women personnel for polling stations to be manned exclusively by women in the Panchayat polls in the state. Preparations are going on in full swing for the rural polls.
On Thursday a meeting will be held to review security arrangements with emphasis on the border areas. As many as 132 booths have been earmarked as sensitive in the Jalpaiguri district.
Out of the 132 booths, 76 are categorised as critical and 56 have been categorised as vulnerable.
“All booths have been inspected. There will be provision of wheelchairs and ramps for the physically challenged. Observers will be visiting the booths” added the District Magistrate. At least 1,500 vehicles, including 500 buses (government and private), have been requisitioned for carrying polling personnel.
