Panchayat election first step to attain Gorkhaland, says UGA campaigners

YAWAN GURUNG, EOI, MIRIK, JULY 3, 2023 : In a door-to-door poll campaign in the run up to the panchayat elections, members of the United Gorkha Alliance are telling voters if the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha and Trinamool Congress win the panchayat poll in the hills, the future of the Gorkha community would be dark.
According to them, the panchayat election was the first step to attain Gorkhaland; and the decision would have to be made by the people, not the leaders.
“We have got a chance to be united,” UGA spokesman Arpan Rai said on Monday.
“It is the Trinamool Congress which is trying to destroy our goals by dividing the Gorkha community.” UGA leader Yogesh Golay said as the election approached Trinamool Congress assured people to build roads and houses.
“If they really wanted they would have done it in the past many years.” Now the people would do it themselves, he said. Hamro Part leader Sangit Thapa said people now had a chance to upstage the corrupt leaders.
Even in Mirik, the Hamro Party, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Gorkha National Liberation Front, the BJP and the Communist Party of revolutionary Marxists have united under the banner of the UGA.
