Fresh violence in Indo-Myanmar border Moreh: 15 houses torched

KalimNews, Imphal, 26 July 2023 : 15 houses belonging to the Meitei community were torched in Moreh town, on the Indo-Myanmar border of Tengnoupal District. This morning, heavily armed Kuki militants shielded by a mob started burning houses. The Manipur state police force stationed at Moreh dispersed the mob however, after the mob dispersed, heavily armed Kuki militants started firing towards the state police force. Cross-firing between the Kuki militants and the state police took place until the afternoon.
Sources said that at around 9.00 am today, a large number of people gathered at the Indo-Myanmar border town of Moreh in Tengnoupal district amid the on-going tensions and started burning 15 houses belonging to the Meitei community, the Hotel Ellora, a 3-star hotel, and other five hotels, and other constructions. The Kuki mob also burned the Forest Office and other Manipur Government property in the presence of a large number of Central forces, including the Assam Rifles. State police deployed in the border town intervened and dispersed the mob using tear gas. 
After the civilian mob was dispersed, heavily armed militants started firing towards the state police force, and the encounter between the militants and the state police continued until the time of filing this report. There is no report of any casualties on the side of the state police and security force. 
A source said that Myanmar Kuki militants were involved in attacking the Manipur state police.
