Dipaneeta Das, India Today, Kolkata, Jul 20, 2023 : A Chinese national was arrested by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel on Wednesday while trying to sneak into India through the Indo-Nepal border in the Kharibari area of Siliguri in West Bengal.
The arrested individual, 39-year-old Yongxin Peng, was handed over to Kharibari police.
During interrogation, police recovered a Chinese passport and several other documents from Yongxin Peng, sparking possibilities that he was involved in espionage, a police officer told India Today on the condition of anonymity.
Yongxin Peng did not reveal any information regarding his affiliations and also about his motives for sneaking into India, the police officer added.
This is the second incident of a suspicious Chinese national being held along the Indo-Nepal border in less than four months. Earlier in February, another Chinese national was arrested by the SSB while trying to cross into India from Nepal without valid documents. That arrest was made in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur district.
Ties between India and China have been on a low since the Galwan clashes of 2020.
Agencies: The suspected Chinese national Yohin Ping (39), is a resident of Gandong area of China and was arrested from the Panitanki border while entering the Indian territories from Nepal's Kakarvitta town. During interrogation, the Chinese national was found to be inconsistent in his statement. He was found to be in possession of several Chinese articles, a Nepalese passport and a Chinese Citizen ID card, mobile phones and currencies of different countries.
