Ananta Maharaj’s RS candidature rakes up controversy
Don't Miss
Shashikesh Roy | MP | 16 July 2023 : Cooch Behar: Multiple controversies have surfaced regarding BJP’s nominated candidate for Rajya Sabha, Ananta Maharaj. On one hand, there is a controversy over his name, while on the other hand, Trinamool Congress (TMC) ministers and MLAs have levelled various allegations against him, including that of rape.
North Bengal Development Department Minister, Udayan Guha, made a sensational post on social media on Saturday, accusing Ananta Maharaj of raping his follower’s wife. This post has sparked a debate in the political circles of Cooch Behar.
Udayan Guha alleged that there is a long-standing case of rape against Ananta Maharaj. Guha added: “Although he calls himself God, it is ironic, considering the case against him.” Guha stated that candidates contesting in elections must disclose information, including cases against them, which Ananta Maharaj allegedly did not do. He criticised the hypocrisy and expressed disapproval of such people going to the Rajya Sabha.
Trinamool MLA from Sitai Assembly Constituency, Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, has levied serious allegations against Ananta Maharaj. He claimed that Ananta Maharaj needed a job to marry his lover. He then obtained a job using the certificate of his late friend Nagendra Nath Roy.
The BJP claimed that the Trinamool is making these accusations because they cannot accept Ananta Maharaj as a BJP Rajya Sabha candidate. Ananta Maharaj, the BJP’s Rajya Sabha candidate, is a leader of The Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association.
However, during the submission of nomination papers, his electoral national picture identity card went viral on social media, revealing that Ananta Maharaj’s real name is Nagen Roy. This led to sarcastic comments from Trinamool and even some BJP supporters, questioning why he went by the name Ananta Maharaj for so long.
However, Cooch Behar district BJP president, Sukumar Roy, dismissed Udayan Guha’s accusations, claiming that no one has heard of anything like this. He questioned why Guha had remained silent until now and suggested that Guha’s statements are politically motivated since Ananta Maharaj is now a Rajya Sabha MP who aims to address the issues faced by North Bengal.
