
Army rescues 300 more tourists stranded in Sikkim

SNS, GANGTOK, 18 JUNE 2023 : The Indian Army continued rescue efforts for tourists stranded in heavy rain-induced incidents at Chungthang in North Sikkim today.
According to the Army, there was a report that 300 tourists were likely to come down from Lachung and Lachen, and troops of the Striking Lion Division, Trishakti Corps, who had worked relentlessly and assisted 3500 tourists yesterday, were fully geared up for the second day as well.
"On 18 June 2023, by 11 AM, all the 300 tourists were assisted to crossover the temporary bridge for further move towards Gangtok. The tourists were provided food, resting place and medical comfort by the Indian Army troops," the Army said in a statement.
"At 12:15 PM, a civilian fell unconscious and the Army medical team immediately swung in to action. The patient was immediately evacuated by ambulance and stretcher and taken to the nearest Army Held Hospital for further treatment.'the patient was reported to be stable at the time of reporting," it added.
Meanwhile, on 17 June, under the guidance of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, a rescue operation was conducted at Pegong Chungthang following a massive landslide there. The operation led by Minister for Roads Samdup Lepcha brought together key stakeholders, including the Heads of Departments (HOD) of the Chungthang Sub-Division, the Officer Commanding (OC) of the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), engineers from GREF and members of the local Panchayat.
"Their combined efforts resulted in the successful rescue of 2,413 individuals who were trapped in the affected area," a Sikkim government official said.
The landslide, which occurred in the early hours of 16 June, had left the residents of Pegong Chungthang stranded and in desperate need of assistance.
"The swift action taken by the authorities, under the guidance of Samdup Lepcha, ensured that rescue operations were promptly initiated. Samdup Lepcha played a vital role in coordinating the rescue efforts. His presence on the ground motivated the rescue teams and assured the affected individuals that every possible measure would be taken to ensure their safety," the official added.
"The HODs of Chungthang Sub-Division and the OC of GREF brought their expertise to the operation, strategically deploying resources and coordinating rescue operations. GREF engineers showcased their technical skills, working tirelessly to clear debris and create safe pathways for the stranded individuals," he added.
A total of 2,413 individuals were successfully rescued from the affected area, it is learnt. Medical teams were also present to provide immediate medical attention to the injured, ensuring their wellbeing throughout the evacuation process.
According to officials, the GREF also vowed to build a new bridge soon.
