In Alipurduar district, storm was accompanied by hailstones
TT, Malda/Alipurduar, 23.05.23 : A storm scythed through three districts of north Bengal on Sunday night, killing two persons, levelling homes, uprooting trees and electric poles and destroying crops.
Bangshibadan Mandal, 40, died after a tree fell on a tin-roofed hut at Anandapur near Malda.
Arpita Mandal, a 10-year-old girl, was killed when a tree was uprooted and collapsed on a house in the same village.
A banyan tree uprooted in the storm razed to the ground a pandal that was raised for a wedding at Rampur, which is also in Malda district. Five children and two women were injured.
In Habibpur block of the district, several houses with tin roofs were damaged and a number of electric poles were uprooted, which snapped the power supply.
Sources in the district horticulture department said mango orchards had also been hit by the calamity. “We are assessing the loss in association with the district administration,” said an official.
In Alipurduar district, the storm was accompanied by hailstones. At the district headquarters town, trees were uprooted in at least four wards and there was power outage. A tree fell on the road that connects the town with Cooch Behar and Falakata.
The hailstorm affected Tufanganj 1 and 2 blocks in the neighbouring Cooch Behar district.
