Sikkim tries efficacy of electric cars in high altitude areas
Don't Miss
PRAKASH ADHIKARI, EOI, GANGTOK, MAY 18, 2023 : The Power Department of Sikkim in association with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of the Union Power Ministry organized on Wednesday an endurance and viability test of electric cars at high altitudes in Sikkim. This test is aimed to assess the compatibility and performance of electric vehicles in mountainous regions as part of the E-Mobility programme and promote sustainable fuel efficiency awareness.
Additional Chief Engineer Pemba Lepcha and his team raised awareness about electric vehicles and their significance to the people and tourists during their journey in the electric car which began at Bypass Road, Gangtok, at an elevation of 5,400 ft and reached its destination at Nathula Pass, at an altitude of 14,140 ft, after a brief halt at Tsomgo Lake for vehicle charging.
Due to the uphill drive and low temperatures until Tsomgo, only 40 km could be covered with a 70 percent battery drain.
The findings of the team indicated that electric vehicles were a feasible option in mountain regions, provided there were fast charging stations available at various locations.
The State Designated Agency will share their report with electric vehicle manufacturers and the Ministry in the coming days.
The team ensured strict adherence to the guidelines directed by permit officials and police authorities during the documentation process
