Sikkim for the first time sending delegates to Cannes Film Festival
PRAKASH ADHIKARI, EOI, GANGTOK, MAY 4, 2023: The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has nominated and sponsored two delegates from Sikkim, Chairperson of Sikkim Film Promotion Board Pooja Sharma, and filmmaker and director Samten Bhutia, to attend the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2023.
This is the first time that any Sikkimese representative has been selected to attend the world famous film festival. The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, held annually in Cannes, France.
The festival is attended by filmmakers, actors, producers, and other industry professionals, as well as film enthusiasts from around the world. It is known for its glamorous red carpet events and parties, as well as the screening of high-quality films.
Pooja Sharma expressed her gratitude towards the Centre and Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang for his support in promoting the uplift of artists in Sikkim. Pooja Sharma and Samten Bhutia will be among 14 delegates from the north-east attending the event; representing Sikkim asa state and showcasing its culture and traditions on a global platform.
“This opportunity marks a significant milestone for the film fraternity in Sikkim, which is expected to increase the state's reach and popularity while establishing it has a major player in the film industry.
The participation of Sikkim in such an esteemed global platform is a significant step towards promoting the state's rich cultural heritage to the world. We will popularise and promote our State in terms of Film shooting destination, tourist destination,” said Pooja Sharma
