Demand for inclusion of Lepcha language in 8th schedule
Don't Miss
YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, 17 MAY 2023: The Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (ILTA) has set up posters in Kalimpong town demanding the inclusion of the Lepcha language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
ILTA Secretary General Rumden Lepcha said on Wednesday: “Lepcha language is becoming extinct as an indigenous language. As this language was the official language of Darjeeling hills in 1911, ILTA demands that this language should be included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. Then it will be the responsibility of the government to protect it.”
Earlier in February this year, Rajya Sabha M. P. Shanta Chhetri had raised the demand for inclusion of the Lepcha language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
