Mortal remains of slain Gorkha soldier reach Bagdogra, cremation today
PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, SILIGURI, 6 MAY 2023 : The mortal remains of Gorkha soldier Siddhant Chhetri was brought to Bagdogra airport in a special flight on Saturday afternoon around 2:45 pm and was taken to the 158 Base Hospital where last respects were paid on behalf of the army and the police. Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh was also there to pay his respects.
Siddhant joined the army on March 19, 2019. In view of his excellent performance and talent he was posted in Jammu & Kashmir in the Special Force of the 9th Parachute Regiment two years ago.
The Para (SF), to which he belonged, is a group of Special Forces battalions of the Parachute Regiment in the army. Siddhant’s cousin Rachana Chhetri said: “We received continuous calls from Siddhant’s unit in Rajouri at around 8 am on Friday but we were given confirmation of his death only around 10 am. Before going to the operation he had made a call and informed that he would call back after completing the operation. He also said that he would call on Saturday if possible.
”After schooling from Vidyasagar High School in Bijanbari, Siddhant joined Darjeeling Government College and joined the army in the middle of his studies. Siddhant’s funeral with full military honours will beheld on Sunday at around10:30 am in his native place at Upper Rangdu Busty in Pulbazar, Bijanbari
