Darjeeling Municipality releases music video on need to keep the queen of the hill stations clean

EOI, DARJEELING, MAY 27, 2023 : With the objective of creating awareness among the public of the necessity to keep the town clean, the Darjeeling Municipality on Saturday released a music video.

The video is titled “Sundar Sahar Banau” (let us make this is a beautiful city), and the lyrics are penned by Dal Singh Akela, a prominent writer and dramatist. The video features local artists from Darjeeling. Darjeeling Municipality chairman Dipen Thakuri said it was a conscious effort of the civic body to reach out to the people with a positive message “This is the first time that the civic body has ever made a music video.

It has been done with the aim of spreading awareness among the people about keeping Darjeeling clean. We hope that people will follow the message in the song," he said. The head of the civic body maintained that the vehicles which collected garbage from households would play the song while on routine duty and also broadcast it indifferent local channels and social media platforms for people to listen to the information through the song. 

When asked if any action would be taken against offenders who were found throwing garbage at random, he said: “It is hard to take stringent actions as it will send a wrong message to the public. 

However, in the door-to-door collection of garbage that is being done we are collecting Rs 50 for the service against which a receipt is being given.

”The civic body chairman also said: “The receipt will be important in the future as we will not be issuing any license or other such things from the Municipality to people who do not have this receipt.” A resolution would be adopted in the board meeting soon.

Thakuri said that through the door to door collection of garbage from households domestic waste had been minimized but garbage generated from commercial establishments was still an issue.

“We are thinking of a concept to minimize waste from commercial establishments where we are collecting garbage, keeping them indifferent sections, but they seem to be throwing waste in vats. We do not know why they are doing this and could be due to their lack of consciousness,” said Thakuri adding that one of the main problems of Darjeeling not being able to stay clean was people throwing garbage outside the vats. 

The civic body chairman said that the municipality was trying to bring garbage collection in a proper system for which they would also be installing CCTVs in different places to keep a check on the offenders.
