EOI, KALIMPONG, MAY 23, 2023 : Domestic animals are now dying due to lumpy virus in various rural areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. For this cattle breeders are worried. This infection has been observed especially in cows and bulls. In Kalimpong too, a large number of cattle have died due to this virus.
The malady has symptoms such as swelling of the head, high fever etc. Dr. Devendra Pradhan, Deputy Director of Kalimpong District Animal Husbandry said that Kalimpong ARD Department is working to prevent lumpy virus.
According to him, vaccination was started by the department to prevent this virus last February. But at that time many farmers refused to vaccinate. However, those who want to vaccinate their cows are being vaccinated by the department.
Unvaccinated animals are getting infected. Vaccination is being done up to one kilometer away from the Lumpy virus infected village. He also said that the ARD department has been able to control the lumpy virus to some extent. Because this virus is not spreading the way it should grow.
