Bhutan plans concessions in Sustainable Development Fee as incentive to tourists

Don't Miss

NIRMALYA BANERJEE, EOI, KOLKATA, MAY 3, 2023:  Faced with a marked drop in the number of tourists visiting the Himalayan kingdom, the authorities in Bhutan are now planning to introduce incentives in the form of concessions to the Sustainable Development Fee.
Prime Minister of Bhutan Lotay Tshering has been quoted in the Bhutanese media in a meeting with the private sector last week that there were plans to given promotional discounts on SDF for tourisrs who wanted a longer stay in the country if they had paid for the initial days.
Particularly for tourists who would go trekking in Bhutan, if they had paid the SDF for the first 10 days they could be allowed to continue the trek without paying the SDF for the remaining days. As Bhutan was being promoted as a family destination, the SDF could be waived for tourists under the age of 18 years.
Currently, children of five years and below are exempted from the SDF and children between six and 12 years of age are charged 50 percent of the SDF
