Mukul Roy is a BJP MLA, says Mamata : I am absolutely fine- Roy

MP | 19 Apr 2023 : Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday, cleared the air about Mukul Roy by saying that he is a BJP MLA. Roy suddenly departed for New Delhi on Tuesday, leading his son Subhrangshu to lodge a missing complaint with the police station. 

However, following Mukul’s arrival in Delhi, he told a Bengali news channel that he was there to speak with several leaders of the BJP which includes the Union Home minister Amit Shah and BJP’s national president JP Nadda. He also said he wants to fight with the BJP against the TMC in Bengal in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. 

“You can’t fight Trinamool Congress by staying in TMC,” he said. 

Even as Mukul’s son asserted that his father is indisposed with several illnesses that include dementia which leads to sudden memory loss, 

Roy clarified that he is absolutely fine. Roy also rubbished his son’s allegations that he was forcefully taken away to Delhi. Mukul’s statement that he was never in TMC has put the party in a quandary. Despite winning the Krishnanagar (North) seat on a BJP ticket in the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections, he re-joined Trinamool Congress by taking the party flag in the presence of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. 

Soon after, the Leader of the Opposition in Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari moved the Calcutta High Court demanding the dismissal of Roy under the anti-defection law. 

However, during a hearing of the case, Roy’s counsel told Speaker Biman Banerjee that Mukul is a BJP MLA and never joined TMC. This caused much confusion over which party Roy belonged to. 

Addressing the Press, Mamata Banerjee cleared the air and claimed that Mukul Roy is a BJP MLA and he can choose to do whatever he thinks is good for him. But, BJP leaders Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu made it clear that there is no space for Mukul in the Bengal BJP unit. Meanwhile, according to a new agency report, though Roy has physically improved, his doctors remained unsure of his mental functioning. 

Roy underwent a surgery for hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the brain, which may cause brain damage. 

“Mr Roy’s (physical) health has improved a lot compared to what it was a month back. He is physically fit to travel, but how much he has regained his mental functioning is yet to be ascertained dementia can never be totally reversed and there is always a chance it may get worse with age,” eminent Neurosurgeon Dr S N Singh, who has been treating the politician for quite some time, reportedly told a news agency.
