Darjeeling is different, educational institutions in hills to be remain this week

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, APRIL 16, 2023 : Unlike in other parts of West Bengal, educational institutions in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration area are not going to be closed this week.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Sunday that all educational institutions across the state of West Bengal would remain closed from Monday to Saturday due to the heatwave sweeping across the state.
Shortly after that, the summer holiday would also begin. GTA Sabhasad Rajesh Chauhan who is in charge of the primary education department in the hill said, however, that educational institutions in the GTA area would not be closed.
He said all the educational institution in the GTA area – primary, secondary and college level– would be kept open according to the routine set by the GTA. He said the State Government had announced a week’s holiday in educational institutions because of the extreme heat.
There was no chance of a rain in the state till next Thursday, not even a cloud cover. Students, especially those in the villages who had to walk long distances or commute on bicycles, were suffering and could fall ill.
On the contrary, in the GTA region the situation was different; in the hills the summer was enjoyable.
“Therefore the administration has decided that the educational institutions in the GTA area will remain operational.
Last year, too, while the summer vacation was extended in schools due to the extreme heat, in the hill areas the educational institutions followed the previously announced calendar
