TT Correspondent | Alipurduar | 09.03.23 : An elderly woman and her grandson died in a road accident on a state highway in Alipurduar district on Wednesday afternoon.
Sources said that Parul Rani Pal, 62, and Shyamayan, 8, her grandson, were walking back home from a market in Falakata block along the Falakata-Dhupguri state highway when a pick-up van coming from Dhupguri ran over them at Pakirtala, a locality along the highway, around 2.30pm.
Residents rushed to help and took the duo to the super-specialty hospital in Falakata where doctors pronounced them dead.
Furious residents blocked the state highway in protest for around 30 minutes till a team from Falakata police station spoke to the protesters and cleared the blockade. They recovered the bodies and seized the killer vehicle.
Police are searching for the driver.
Body found
A team of Phansidewa police of Darjeeling district recovered the unidentified and decomposed body of a man from Daribuxjote on the outskirts of Siliguri on Wednesday.
Residents spotted the body floating near the Mahananda barrage and informed police.
The police sent the body to the NBMCH for post-mortem.
