TT Correspondent   |   Siliguri   |   08.03.23  : The forest department seized deer horns and a live tokay gecko from three men at Naukaghat in Siliguri on Tuesday.

A team of the Dabgram range of the Baikunthapur forest division raided a bus after receiving a tip-off and intercepted the three men. 

The animal parts and the lizard species were found in the possession of  Ajibul Haque, Samit Barman and Krishna Barman.

They are the residents of Alipurduar and CoochBehar.

The tokay gecko has a demand on the grey market as the animal is used in traditional Chinese medicines, said a forester. “

The horns as well as the gecko were smuggled into India from Bhutan. There was a plan to smuggle the same into China,” said a source.

Cannabis seized 

New Jalpaiguri police seized 75 kg of cannabis from a car near Siliguri on Monday night.

The police stopped the car on NH27 between Fulbari and Ghoshpukur. While searching the vehicle, they found several packets stuffed with the cannabis which cost around Rs eight lakh.

Raju Dha, Sanjay Sarkar, Ravi Das, Sukumar Sahaand Bhaskar Saha — all from Cooch Behar — were arrested.

“They were carrying the cannabis from CoochBehar to Calcutta,” said a police officer.
