A spectacular welcome awaits G20 delegates in Makaibari tea estate

PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, SILIGURI, MARCH 28, 2023 : Art installations with rare indigenous white orchids, a spectacular mural that celebrates the female tea pluckers, thousands of colourful prayer flags fluttering over immaculate tea tasting tables, a rare viewing of machines that date back over a century and one of the most sensational and rare phenomena legendary for its drama in the hallowed world of tea - moonlight plucking -- have all been arranged to welcome G20 delegates arriving in Makaibari on April 1; with the promise to make it one of the most spectacular of G20 events this year under the presidency of India.
Makaibari, the world's first tea factory dating back to 1859,spread across 1400 acres of plantation, half of which is a verdant rainforest. is playing host to the 2nd Tourism Working Group Meeting of G20.
Managing Director of the Luxmi Group Rudra Chatterjee's vision for the delegates was to immerse them in the spectacular flavor of this mythical landscape and celebrate its people who he considers the backbone of the entire tea industry.
Chatterjee has therefore created one of India's largest murals - The Wall of the People -spanning the entire length and breadth of the factory facade that celebrates real life tea pluckers and not imaginary faces.
The towering art work has already become a massive draw among locals and tourists visiting the Darjeeling region, all of them stopping by at the Makaibari factory to watch it in awe. Chatterjee says: “It’s the people of Makaibari and Luxmi estates that make Luxmi Tea Group what it is today.
At Makaibari, the community has been around for four or more generations working with us. Now, there are families whose third-generations are going to schools and colleges to become doctors, hotel management professionals and many who have joined us in the factory and office, to lead our operations and management.
Luxmi Tea Group has always believed in giving back to the society and ensuring better livelihood of its people has been the core values of the company.
The mural celebrates these people and has become a massive point of interest for people of this entire regional ready.”.
Delegates will also experience an absolute phenomenon of sorts, as the evening sets in over an enormous carpet of green for as far as one can see.
They will be escorted by torch bearers and local dancers to one of the garden's most historic patches, - the Paila Kheti teashrubs dating back nearly 165years; producing the most awarded organic Darjeeling tea in the world. Silver Tips Imperial.
Delegates will also experience the magic of the White Orchid, gigantic art installations at the entrance of the Makaibari factory, for a perfect welcome.
Chatterjee says: “The name Kurseong means the land of white orchid, which grows locally in abundance on the hill-slopes. Kurseong is where the estate is situated.
The orchids shall be showcased for all to admire for sure.”.Makaibari has over 1,500people associated with their tea estates, with 400 to 500 workers engaged daily in plucking, who are primarily local inhabitants from seven villages close to Makaibari
