Hill cops to revive carrom
Darjeeling police have decided to organise the Darjeeling Cup Carrom Tournament with a cash prize of around Rs 80,000
Vivek Chhetri | TT | Darjeeling | 07.02.23 : Carrom, a popular board game of yesteryears in Darjeeling, is set for a comeback in public discussion with the Darjeeling police organising a Darjeeling Cup carrom tournament this week.
“Darjeeling police have decided to organise the Darjeeling Cup Carrom Tournament with a cash prize of around Rs 80,000,” said a police source.
The knockout tournament will be held at the police station for three days starting Tuesday.
The group stage and final matches will be held on February 10 and 11.
Competitions will be held across two categories — individual and pair.
Dozens of carrom boards used to dot the ground floor of the Old Barracks building, popularly known as the beef market, till it was demolished for a new market complex in the early 2000s. Carrom didn’t find a place in the new building and slowly the game faded from public memory. This tourney may revive the board game, feel enthusiasts.
