
G 20 meet in Darjeeling set to give big boost to tourism in hills

EOI, DARJEELING, FEBRUARY 16, 2023 : Preparations are in full swing in the Darjeeling hills to host a G20 tourism meet in April during India's presidency of the global forum. G20 chief coordinator, Harsh Vardhan Shringla arrived in Darjeeling on Thursday to oversee preparation and held discussions with officials of the Bengal government and the Darjeeling district magistrate and the Superintendent of Police.
"A very important meeting of the G20 will be held from April 1 to4. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the hills as the highest tourism authorities from the USA, Russia, United Kingdom, Japan and Australia will be in Darjeeling.
They will first hand seethe potential of the tourism and tea industry and the heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and spread a positive message in their respective countries," he said.
Shringla said the G20 meet will bolster the tourism of the hills and infrastructure, capacity building and beautification of the hills station.
"Above all the hills people ill benefit from such an important global meet. We will have international media attention and focus because of the visiting dignitaries," he said.
The G20 Heads of States and Government Summit which is the main event though will be held in September, later this year.
However nearly two hundred G20 meets will be held in fifty-six different locations in the country.
