Dev Raj | TT | Patna | 26.01.23 : A teacher from Kurseong in Bengal’s Darjeeling district jumped out of a running bus in Bihar to save herself from being molested on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
She was seriously injured in the incident.
According to Purnea superintendent of police (SP) Aamir Javed, police found the 38-year-old woman lying unconscious on the roadside around 1.30am on Wednesday at Baisi of Purnea district.
“She was rushed to the nearby government primary health centre where the doctors referred her to sadar hospital (district hospital) for better treatment,” Javed said.
The woman had come to Vaishali on Monday with regard to a job vacancy and was returning to Siliguri by bus. She would have proceeded to Kurseong from there.
“I was travelling alone in a bus when four or five youths boarded the bus at Dalkola check post. They started eve-teasing and making gestures. The bus was full in the beginning, but many passengers got down in between and only a few were left,” the victim said in her statement to the police.
“They were asking me to sit here and there. Nobody was trying to stop them. They started coming near me. I became afraid because I understood what they would do to me. I broke the window and jumped out of the running bus to save myself. I do not know what happened after that,” the victim added.
However, she was incoherent in parts of her video-recorded statement due to a concussion in the head.
The victim had telephoned her brother while she was still on the bus to tell him about the situation. Later the police also informed her family members.
“Our mother got a call around 3:30am that something has happened to her. We rushed to Purnea and reached here around 11.30am in the morning. She is in very bad condition. We are taking her to Siliguri for better treatment,” the victim’s sister-in-law Binita Thapa told The Telegraph.
“She is not in a condition to explain everything or provide details of the incident. I do not know whether the police have registered an FIR. Some deputy superintendent of police had telephoned us. Some police officials also recorded whatever details she could give,” Thapa added.
An FIR has been registered at the Baisi police station under IPC section 354D (stalking) against four unidentified youths.
“Further investigations are being carried out. Efforts are being made to identify the four unknown accused. Our officials are going through the CCTV footage from cameras at the integrated check post at Dalkola also for this purpose,” Purnea SP told this newspaper.
