Raju Bista unveils statue of Shaeed Durga Malla at Bagrakote

PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, SILIGURI, JANUARY 8, 2023: Darjeeling Lok Sabha MP Raju Bista on Sunday unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Saheed Durga Malla at Bagrakote on Sunday. 

Bagrakote being the gateway to the rest of Dooars, it is befitting that the statue of freedom fighters Saheed Durga Malla and Dharti Aba Bir Birsa Munda are placed in the beautiful place. Bista said on the occasion: "For generations the contributions of the people from our region, and other marginalized communities towards India's Independence had remained unacknowledged to a large extent. But, thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gradually more and more people across our nation are becoming aware of the immense contributions made by the people from Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars and the rest of north-east India. 

"He said that freedom fighters like Subedar Niranjan Chettri of Manipur, Capt Ram Singh Thakuri of Himachal, Helen Lepcha from Kurseong, Dal Bahadur Giri, Gaga Tshering Dukpa, Kirshna Bahadur Mukhia from Darjeeling, Chabilal Upadhyay, Dalbir Singh Lohar, Bhakta Bahadur Pradhan from Assam,Jangbir Sapkota, DambarSingh Gurung, Ari Bahadur Gurung from Kalimpong showcased the rich contribution made by Gorkhas towards our freedom struggle across India. 

"I applaud the efforts made by the 'Adivasi-Gorkha Sanyukt Samity' and all the people of Bagrakote towards installing this statue. Every community came together to lend a helping hand. This is why our region is so beautiful. For generations we have lived in harmony, be they Bengali, Adivasi,Koch-Rajbangshi, Toto, Mech, Rabha, Gorkha; all have lived like a family. Our Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars are the living proof of "Unity in Diversity," and people of  Bagrakote have added another thread to this strong bond of love and fraternity we all share," said Bista.

Bista said that he wanted to appeal to the people from the hill region, Terai and the Dooars, especially the youths, to learn more about the glorious history of people of the region and place.

“Unless and until we learn and celebrate our greats, no one else will. It is our duty to preserve the great legacy of our forefathers, while laying a strong foundation for a better and brighter tomorrow, he said. 

Jalpaiguri MP Jayanta Roy, civil society leaders, academics, Intellectuals and prominent people from across the Dooars were present on the occasion.
