Binita Paul   |   TT  |   Siliguri   |   06.01.23: North Bengal University will construct two new buildings to accommodate some departments and create space for different events.

Omprakash Mishra, the vice-chancellor whose term has been extended by a month earlier this week, said that the chief engineer and the deputy finance officer of the varsity have been asked to take necessary steps to set up the new infrastructure.

Located on the outskirts of Siliguri, NBU is the oldest and largest university in north Bengal. “We have decided to construct two new buildings for academic affairs. Because of rising number of students, a multi-storey building to house departments such as computer science, management and distance education would be built,” he said.

According to Mishra, the other building will be a centralised hall to host various seminars and workshops.

“The centralised hall will have state-of-the-art facilities and can be tailor-made for various seating capacities, starting from 50 to 1,000 seats. Two elevators will be installed at the humanities building for easy accessibility,” the vice-chancellor added.

Research

The NBU, sources said, has also tied up with the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), a central government organisation, for collaborative research on early detection of a new variant of the SARS-COV-2 virus prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.

Ranadhir Chakraborty, a professor of the biotechnology department at the varsity, has already started work in the area with his team, which include representatives of other departments like bioinformatics and microbiology.

Mishra has also appreciated the decision.

“We are happy to be part of the nationwide programme undertaken by the National SARS-COV-2 Genomic Consortium. Our team will start the study in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation area and later visit other parts of north Bengal,” he said.
