Dragged for over 1 km, man charred to death after truck hits scooter in Siliguri


ANI, 6 January 2023, Siliguri:  man was charred to death after a dumper truck hit his scooter and he was dragged for around 500 meters on Thursday night in Siliguri's Shivmandir area.

The deceased has been identified as Ananta Das.

The incident happened near Gate number 2 of North Bengal University at around 8 pm.

According to locals, Ananta Das, a resident of Siliguri was returning from Bagdogra to his home. During that time, a speeding dumper truck hit the scooter and dragged the deceased for around 500 meters from North Bengal University Gate number 1 to Gate number 2.

Both the truck and the scooter caught fire thereafter.

The body of the scooter rider Ananta Das was charred after the fire.

The fire brigade reached the spot on receiving information about the accident. Later two more fire tenders arrived and the fire was brought under control.

Utpal Goswami, a local resident of the Shivmandir area said, "I came to know that a major incident occurred in front of the University. I reached the spot and found that the body was fully charred after the two vehicles caught fire."

Local police have arrested the driver and registered a case.

Agencies: In a grim reminder of the Kanjhawala incident in Delhi, a scooter-borne was killed after being hit and dragged by a dumper truck for about 1.5 km in West Bengal's Siliguri on January 5. 
The person died a very painful death, as the scooter, that got hit by a dumper, got stuck to the edges of the truck, which kept on moving for about 1.5 km, dragging the victim along. 
Soon, the scooter caught fire, which charred the body of the victim.
According to reports, the fateful incident took place in front of the University of North Bengal campus at around 8.30 pm on Thursday.
A scooter-borne man died in West Bengal's Siliguri after being dragged by a dumper truck for one kilometre on Thursday. 
As per police sources, the man was hit by a truck while he was returning home. After being hit by the truck in front of the University of North Bengal campus at around 8.30 pm, the scooter got stuck to the edges of the truck dragging the man, identified as Ananta Das, along. 
A local trader by profession, Ananta Das, was returning from Bagdogra to his home when he met with the accident. 
The scooter also caught fire, which charred the body of the victim.
The driver of the dumper truck has been arrested. 
The victim, identified as Ananta Das, was returning home on this scooter and was hit by the dumper truck. 
Das was a trader by profession. He met with the fatal accident while he was returning to his residence on his scooter from a local trading hub at Bagdogra. 
Fire tenders were called to douse the fire, however, by then Das was dead. 
The accident, which is reminiscent of the Delhi hit-and-run case where a 20-year-old Anjali was dragged for 12 kilometres killing her in a horrific manner, has left tire marks for nearly one kilometre in front of the university, local residents told.
