Bimal Gurung favours three-tier panchayat election in hills

YAWAN GURUNG, EOI, MIRIK, DECEMBER 25, 2022: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung said on Sunday he was in favour of three-tier panchayat elections in the hills. He is currently on a week-long visit to Mirik.
On Sunday morning he went to rural areas under the Gopaldhara Okaity samasty no. 23 as a part of his campaign to reach the common people. While observers said this move of the GJM president was an exercise to prepare for the panchayat polls which would be held in 2023,Gurung said his visit was not related to the panchayat areas would be deprived of many facilities and concessions. 
A three-their panchayat would carry more responsibilities and capacities. Expressing dissatisfaction with the election roster issued by the West Bengal government, Gurung said the roster could not fulfil the aspirations of the people .He believed that a population of 700 could be a problem for one gram sabha member. 
He said the GJM had written a letter to the State Government, expressing displeasure with the roster. During the day, Gurung reached 31 villages in tea plantation areas of Mirik. polls. Revealing that he was in favour of a three-tier panchayat structure in the hills, Gurung said his part would contest in the panchayat election. 
“The panchayat election is a constitutional arrangement, so the GJM would undoubtedly go to the election in the blocks where the elections would be held. ”Panchayat elections were necessary, he said. Without elected panchayat bodies, people in rural areas would be deprived of many facilities and concessions.
