SNS, SILIGURI, 6 DECEMBER 2022: One of the two rescued kangaroos at Bengal Safari: North Bengal Wild Animal Park near Siliguri died today.
Authorities at the park said the kangaroo named Alexa appeared to be below one year and had fallen sick yesterday
"A female kangaroo died today. The cause of the death will he ascertained following a post-mortem," said the director of the park, Dawa Sangmu Sherpa.
"With a heavy heart, this is to inform you all that our Alexa is no more. She was having respiratory problems since yesterday morning and was under observation of the vet team of Darjeeling, Kolkata and Siliguri. She succumbed today morning at 5:00 am. The post-mortem report is yet to he received," a note from the Park said today.
Sources said the animal had displayed symptoms of drowsiness.
"It was brought under immediate medical intervention. But it died at 4 am today. Autopsy has been conducted, and now only one kangaroo remains in the park-Xavier," the sources said.
The kangaroos and four exotic primates had been a special attraction in t he p ark that also houses ot her indigenous animals.
Three kangaroos had been rescued from two separate locations near the Baikunthapur Forest before they could be smuggled out on I April night. The carcass of another kangaroo was also
found the next day.
One of the three kanproos, Lucus, that was also kept in the park had died on 8 April. It had symptoms of chronic myopathy, sources had said.
The kangaroos have been for public viewing in the enclosure of the park since May.
The sources said the kangaroos and primates had led to an increase in the footfall in the park.
