Lover dies by suicide on Facebook Live hours after killing girlfriend in Siliguri

A man died by suicide while being live on Facebook, hours after he allegedly killed his girlfriend in Siliguri, West Bengal.

Dipaneeta Das, India Today, Siliguri, Nov 15, 2022:  On Monday, Siliguri Police recovered the mutilated body of Rhea Biswas, who was murdered by her lover.

By Dipaneeta Das: A day after the nation was left in shock with the news of a heinous murder in Delhi where a man killed and chopped up his lover’s body into 35 pieces, a similar incident was reported from Siliguri in West Bengal where a man died by suicide hours after allegedly killing his girlfriend.

On Monday, Siliguri Police recovered the mutilated body of Rhea Biswas, who was murdered by her lover. The man, identified as Kiran Debnath, later died by suicide while livestreaming on social media. He jumped in front of a train on Sunday.

According to police sources, Debnath tortured and battered Rhea after she refused to leave her husband despite being in a relationship with him for two years. Rhea’s body was recovered from the bathroom.

“There were injuries and scuffle marks on the victim’s body,” a police source said. The incident took place in the Chatura Gach Khatal slum area under the New Jalpaiguri police station of Siliguri Metropolitan Police.

The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Investigating officers further revealed that Kiran visited Rhea’s house on Sunday night when they both entered into a heated argument and he slashed her throat with a knife.

A resident of Nadia, Rhea lived in Siliguri with her husband, Romeo Biswas, and their 5-year-old son. Speaking to AajTak Bangla/India Today, locals shared that Rhea and Kiran had an affair for the past two years. “The boy visited Rhea almost regularly in the absence of her husband,” a local said. Another added that the duo had also fled earlier in October. However, the girl later returned to her husband.

Neighbours discovered Rhea’s butchered body at around 3 am on Monday. “We heard the child weep hysterically. His mother was not with him when we saw the child at around 3 am. We looked around and noticed that the bathroom door was open,” said Subhash Roy, a localite. He added, “We discovered Rhea lying on the floor with her throat slit.”

Later in the night, Debnath walked up to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station and died by suicide. Before Kiran jumped in front of a train, he went live on Facebook, where he confessed to his crime. “I killed Rhea,” he stated in the video. “I wouldn’t have killed her, neither would have taken this step (to commit suicide) but she left me with no choice,” Kiran said. “I am scared; I have nothing to live for. If I live, I will have to spend the rest of my life in jail,” the man added.

This comes a day after the Delhi Police arrested Aaftab Poonawala for the murder of a 27-year-old woman, Shraddha Walkar, after he chopped her body into 35 pieces and scattered the pieces across the national capital over a period of 16 days.
