Custodial suicide attempt victim dies, four policemen suspended


EOI, SILIGURI, NOVEMBER 22, 2022: After battling with death for 10 consecutive days the youth who had attempted suicide in a Siliguri police lock-up died on Monday in a nursing  home  in the city. An autopsy was conducted at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning. 
According to police sources, the youth, Arpan Shankar, was a resident of Darjeeling.
Meanwhile, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police authorities are facing questions regarding the death of the youth.
The police commissioner himself has already ordered departmental action against four policemen of Pradhan Nagar Police Station for alleged police negligence in the incident.
The youth was arrested by Pradhan Nagar Police Station this month on the allegations of theft.  It is reported that early on November 11, the youth tried to commit suicide with a rope in the lockup at the Pradhan Nagar police station. As soon as the matter was noticed, the youth was taken to Siliguri District  Hospital,  and  then  to  a nursing home. His treatment was going on at the nursing home.
The Police Commissioner said over the phone: “The youth died while under treatment. The body has been sent for post-mortem.” He also said that legal action would be taken against four police personnel, including the Inspector-in-Charge in the incident.
