Army rifleman from Kalimpong killed in road accident in Tamulpur

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, NOVEMBER 8, 2022 : Rifleman Praveen Tamang (31) of the Indian army, a resident of Mairong Forest Settlement under Sakyong Gram Panchayat, was martyred on Monday in an accident involving an army ambulance at Tamulpur in Assam, near the areas bordering Bhutan.
Four other soldiers in the vehicle were injured in the accident. They were on their way to a field firing training at a location some distance away from the army camp.
Praveen Tamang who had attended the Algarah High School and graduated from Kalimpong College came home on vacation on October 4 and returned to Assam on November 2.
On Monday, he made a videophone call to his wife Ritu Tamang on Monday morning. Shortly after that, when his father contacted him, the phone rang but was not received. At about 1.30p.m., the family received the news of Tamang’s death. He has left behind his parents, wife and an eight-month-old son.
A pall of gloom descended on Mairong Forest Settlement as the news of Praveen Tamang’s death reached.
His body is expected to arrive in Mairong on Wednesday and the last rites would be performed according to Buddhist traditions at Mairong Forest Settlement. The army will present a guard of honour.
