Darj gears up for 2nd national `Deusi-Bhailo' competition

SNS, DARJEELING, 23 OCTOBER 2022: With a view to promoting and preserving the rich culture and tradition of the Gorkha community, The Himal World digital news orgnisation is all set to hold the Second National Deusi-Bhailo Competition.
According to the organisation the grand finale of the mega event, to be organized in association with the Information and Cultural Affairs (I & CA) Department and the Tourism Department of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) will be held at Chowrastha in Darjeeling on 6 November.
Deusi and Bhailo are traditional ballads that narrate the Nepali/Gorkha communities traditional stories and History, while also showcasing the community's lifestyle.
While the Deusi is played by men, women of the community take part in the Bhailo programme.
"While interested groups can submit video clips of their Deusi-Bhailo in WhatsApp Telegram (86707-99239/89003-54300) by 28 October, a panel of eminent judges will choose the best 10 groups.
The 10 teams will then be invited to Darjeeling for the the grand finale that will begin at 12 noon on 6 November, Mohan Lama of The Himal World told a press conference (SNS photo) in Darjeeling.
Mr Lama of the Himal said that the First National Deusi-Bhailo Competition was very well received by the people as well as tourists visiting Darjeeling last year.
According to Anos Thapa, the Executive GTA Sabhasad for the I & CA Department, Tihar/Diwali is an important festival for the Gorkhas.
"There is a need for us to preserve our rich culture and tradition. I appeal to all to be there at Chowrastha on 6 November and all to participate in this mega cultural event," Mr. Thapa said.
Bhanu Kanta Ghisingh, the Assistant Director of the I &CA department, GTA, said the culture of singing Deusi-Bhailo songs is slowly losing importance in the modern world.
"There is a need for us to conserve the same and spread awareness among the people. GTA Chief Executive Anit Thapa has also stressed on the need for all to preserve our rich cultural heritage and has encouraged this event," he told the press conference.
According to Mr Lama, the top six winners in each category of Deusi and Bhailo will be awarded cash prizes, trophies and certificates. He added that registrations at www.thehimalworld.com are ongoing while participants can begin sending their video and clips from 23 October.
The last date for filing the videos has been set for 28 October, while the names of
the finalists will be announced on 3 November.
