GJM to take forward Gorkhaland demand: It would form a national committee to take forward the demand for Gorkhaland.
In November, we will organize another seminar in Delhi.
EOI CORRESPONDENT | DARJEELING | SEPTEMBER 11, 2022: On Sunday, the concluding day of the the two-day seminar on creation of a separate Gorkha state, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha announced it would form a national committee to take forward the demand for Gorkhaland.
GJM president Bimal Gurung said it was important for a single body comprising members from different fields to take up the statehood demand.
"In November, we will organize another seminar in Delhi. I expect, we will have the final members comprising different political parties and social organizations. The two-day seminar in Darjeeling was organized to gather views and take suggestions which we have done successfully," he said.
Not forgetting the past experiences of unsuccessful attempt to bring political parties under the same umbrella during the different phases of the statehood agitation, Gurung however said he would not lead the national committee.
"I did not organize this seminar on Gorkhaland for political mileage and gain, nor for post and power. It is not important for me to lead. I am willing to be a foot soldier, but we must unite for our community's issue," he said.
The GJM president said the national committee would formulate Delhi-centric programmes to get the statehood demand heard at the highest level. "We should not indulge only in photo sessions with ministers and national leaders in Delhi. The committee members will have to be proactive and chalk out strategies to influence the concerned people in Delhi," said Bimal Gurung.
In the same breath, the GJM leader emphasized that the Union government should be able to give justice to the Gorkha community.
"Why is the Centre quite on our issue and demand. They should say what they want to give to our community. It is useless to ask the West Bengal government as they do not have the power to give what we want," said Gurung.
The BJP in its election manifesto had promised to find a permanent political solution for the hills and grant tribal status to the 11 left out Gorkha communities. These too are yet to see the light of day. Gurung went into hiding during the 2017 agitation. And surfaced three years later in October, 2020 in Kolkata.
He announced severing ties with the BJP and pledged support to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress. On Sunday though Gurung said Mamata Banerjee had failed to keep her promise. "Bengal brought me back with some intentions. She made promises but has failed to fulfill her share of the bargain," he said. Gurung also took potshots at Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha president Anit Thapa, who now heads the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, alleging the latter had betrayed the people. "Our efforts during the agitation was poisoned by individuals.
How was I to know that conspiracies were being hatched to derail the movement by people I put my faith on, "he lamented without taking names. Guests from Bodoland Territorial Region and Uttarakhand, representatives from the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, Bharatiya Gorkha Janjati Mahasangh and Hamro Party president Ajoy Edwards attended the GJM event.
