SUBHAJOY ROY |  TT  | 15.08.22 : The city received 35mm of rain between Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon and the sky remained overcast through the day.

Similar overcast sky and drizzles are likely through the first half of Monday, the Alipore Met office said.

The possibility of heavy rain was ruled out by the Met office because the depression over the Bay of Bengal, which triggered the rain, is drifting away from the city towards Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

The weather is likely to start improving from the second half of Monday and the sky could clear up on Tuesday, said an official of the Met office.

“The depression lay centred around 10km south-east of Digha at 8.30am on Sunday. Since it was far away from Kolkata, the city did not get heavy rain on Sunday,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata. The coastal town of Digha is about 182km from Kolkata.

“The system will drift further west and travel towards Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh on Monday. Heavy rain is unlikely in Kolkata on Monday, too. Light to moderate rain is likely in the first half of Monday,” he said.

Between 5.30pm on Saturday and 5.30pm on Sunday, the city received 35mm of rainfall.

Several districts of West Bengal are, however, likely to get heavy rain on Monday.
