'Gorkhas of Assam want GAC, not GDC' only on experimental basis but ne

NANDA KIRAT DEWAN, EOI, GOLAGHAT, AUGUST 27 2022" Gorkhas of Assam have rejected the Gorkha Development Council, senior vice chairman of Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee Dil Bahadur Limboo said in Merapani on Thursday while speaking at a ceremony to pay tribute to the memory of Major Durga Malla on his 78th day of martyrdom.

"That the Gorkha Development Council, Assam, could not build a life sizes tatue of first martyr of Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC), Saheed Birbol Limboo, in his hometown in Golaghat, after more than a decade is not only regrettable. So Gorkhas of Assam have rejected the GDC," he said." The All Assam Gorkha Students' Union under my leadership that spearheaded the GAC movement had unanimously resolved to accept the GDC 'Gorkhas of Assam want GAC, not GDC' only on experimental basis but never in lieu of the Gorkha Autonomous Council. 

It is evident since 2016 that GDC doesn't meet the expectations and aspirations of Gorkhas to be an indigenous community of Assam and exercise the right to self determination. The discrimination of Gorkhas with other indigenous communities during NRC upgradation has made it clear," Dil Bahadur Limboo said. 

Limboo was the AAGSU president till 2010 when GDC was declared at Assam Gorkha Sammelan central general conference in Digboi by then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. The Assam government created the GDC on October 11, 2010, by notification of the Department of Welfare of Plain Tribes and Other Backward Classes. "Gorkhas of Assam mostly former AAGSU leaders who had lead the movement from the front, have categorically rejected the GDC and reiterated its faith on GACDC for creation of Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC) .What we the Gorkhas want is indigenous status through gazette notification and right of self determination by creation of Gorkha Autonomous Council with constitutional security and prosperity of the community," Limboo said.
