Enforcement Directorate says Partha Chatterjee is Arpita Mukherjee’s nominee in 31 policies
Advocate Abhijit Bhadra says investigating agency lost time after Partha was taken to Bhubaneswar for medical check-up
MONALISA CHAUDHURI | TT | 04.08.22: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday submitted before the court that they have seized 31 life insurance policies in the name of Arpita Mukherjee in which Partha Chatterjee has been mentioned as the nominee.
The central agency also submitted that they have found documents of one joint partnership firm, one deed of conveyance of a joint property at Bolpur and papers related to a company which was linked to Arpita and one of Partha’s relatives, whose office was found to be registered at the flat in the Club Town Heights at Belgharia from where ₹27.9 crore was seized. The court extended both Chatterjee and Arpita’s remand till August 5.
Sources in the ED said till now they have seized cash ₹49.8 crore and jewellery from two flats — one at Diamond City South near Tollygunge and the other at Club Town Heights at Belgharia — both of which were registered in the name of Arpita Mukherjee. However, this was the first time that the central agency produced documents before the court showing a direct link between Partha and Arpita, one of the investigators said.
ED’s advocate Abhijit Bhadra said the investigating agency lost time after Partha was taken to Bhubaneswar for medical check-up. The prosecution sought a four-day remand for Partha and three-day remand for Arpita.
Arpita’s defence lawyer Soham Bandopadhyay said: “The recovery was made during the police demand of my client and there was no need for police custody for her.” The court extended the police remand of the two by two days.
