Siliguri Police to act against illegal 'call centres'

SNS, SILIGURI, 18 JULY 2022: Siliguri Police Commissioner Gaurav Sharma today said that Siliguri would not turn into another Jamtara.
He was referring to the town in Jharkhand, considered the epicentre of cyber frauds that were reported across the country.
Talking to office bearers of the Siliguri Journalists' Club (SJC), which served a representation to Mr Sharma today, Mr Sharma said: "We will not allow Siliguri to become Jamtara. Police will keep a close eye on such activities.
There are several rules and regulations for setting up a call centre."
The SJC served a letter to Mr Sharma, urging him to take steps against illegal call centres, in view of the recent crackdown on such centre in Siliguri that had been operating under the guise of a Facebook news page.
The Siliguri Metropolitan Police raided the centre in Siliguri and arrested 29 persons in the recent incident.
The SJC requested Mr Sharma to keep an eye on irresponsible activities going on in and around Siliguri in the name of journalism and to take necessary action.
During interaction, Mr Sharma said police will also take action against house owners who provide accommodation to people who set up such illegal call centres
