PRASHANT ACHARYA and DICHEN ONGMU, EOI, SILIGURI / GANGTOK, JULY 20, 2022: The mortal remains of three IRB jawans of Sikkim Police reached Bagdogra airport on Wednesday and later taken to Sikkim, where a "ShokSalami" was presented by the Sikkim Police in the presence of Chief Minister P. S. Golay at Rangpo Police Station. The Chief Minister offered garlands and khadas to the mortal remains.
The jawans, Dhanhang Subba, Pintso Namgyal Bhutia and IndraLal Chhetri, were shot dead in Haiderpur Water Plant in Delhi by their colleague, accused Prabin Rai, on July 18. After killing his fellow jawans, accused Rai surrendered himself to Delhi Police. IRB jawans informed from Delhi that Prabin Rai was moving near heaquarters area suspiciously. His duty hours were from noon to 3 p.m. He entered the quarter at 2.45 p.m. and shot Dhanhang Subba who was in deep sleep, and then fired on Indra Lal Chhetri and then Pintso Namgyal Bhutia.
Luckily, Nar Bahadur Gurung, who was also in the room, managed to escape through the window. In the quarter, Prabin and Gurung used to share the room while the other three stayed in another room. Gurung was now disturbed and unable to sleep properly. Tashi Pincho Bhutia, younger brother of Pintso Namgyal Bhutia, said his brother had called home around 2 p.m. on the day of the incident and said he was going to take bath, before disconnecting the call. Indra Lal Chettri is from Bermoik, west Sikkim. Dhan Hang Subba is from Machong in Pakyong district and Pintso Namgyal Bhutia from Sumin Lingzey, also from Pakyong district. DGP A.Sudhakar Rao termed the incident as human error, stating that such incidents did occur sometimes; and in other State forces as well.
The DGP said that stress was common and everyone went through mental problems. The Sikkim Police were working on this aspect and delivering talks on how to control and manage stress at workplace.
The DGP said Rs4 lakh would be given as ex-gratia from Sikkim Police fund to each of the families of the three deceased. The Chief Minister had announced Rs 5 lakh to each of the families from the Chief Minister's fund
