According to sources, Gulabi Kerketta, who was also speech and hearing impaired, used to stay with Ajit, her brother in the Gudam line area in Satali tea estate that is under Kalchini block of Alipurduar district.

“Around 11.30pm yesterday, Gulabi was sleeping in a room. She suddenly felt the need to relieve herself but could not make it to the washroom. Ajit, her brother, got awake and seeing his sister

relieving herself in the room, he got annoyed. He took a stick and started beating Gulabi indiscriminately,” said a source.

“Hearing Ajit shouting and Gulabi moaning, some neighbours rushed to their house and found the 23-year-old woman lying on the floor and bleeding profusely. They rushed her to the local health centre in Latabari where doctors pronounced her dead,” the source added.

The body was sent to Alipurduar district hospital for post-mortem.

Later, a police team reached the garden and arrested Ajit. A murder case has been registered against the accused.
