Arkamoy Datta Majumdar   |   TT  |  Calcutta   |    06.06.22  : Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday said his party had moles in the Trinamul Congress, a day after Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar had complained that Trinamul had planted spies in the saffron camp.

“Every party deploys its own people in other parties so that they get inside information from them. Even we have some people who give us information from the other side (Trinamul),” Majumdar said.

The Balurghat MP was replying to questions from journalists who had asked him to react to Sarkar’s comments.

“There may be some such people here (BJP) as well. I would speak to Jagannathda. He is our honourable state vice-president. If he has some specific information, the party will act on it,” Majumdar said.

On Saturday, BJP MP Sarkar had claimed that there were Trinamul moles in the BJP. An associate of Sarkar said he was targeting a state BJP leader who was  believed, by a large section of the party, to have close ties with Trinamul.

Sarkar is known to have a strenuous relationship with the people who are currently at the helm of the state organisation.

According to sources, Majumdar’s statement was a planned attempt to keep the morale of BJP workers high. Sarkar’s comment might have had an adverse effect on the workers of the BJP which faced defeats in successive polls, these sources added.

“Our workers are tired and frustrated by repeated poll defeats. They are battling daily threats from Trinamul. In such circumstances, if an MP alleges there is a mole in the party, it can potentially devastate them,” a state BJP office-bearer said.

“That is why Sukantada has tried to balance what Jagannathda said. He tried to send out a message that it is a normal practice for political parties to have moles in rival parties,” the leader said.

Trinamul, however, rejected Majumdar’s claims. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said Majumdar was a political intern and it was pointless to pay heed to what he had said.

“His own MP is accepting that their party is filled with moles. Sukantababu has been forced to manage the situation with such foolish statements,” Ghosh said.
