SUJAL PRADHAN, EOI, GANGTOK, JUNE 16, 2022: The incessant rains triggered fresh landslides in the Himalayan state of Sikkim on Wednesday night, claiming one life and leaving four people injured in the Namchi District.
Following fresh landslides, connectivity with the Mangan District has been cut for the next three days.
As torrential rains hit the Mamring area in the Namchi District, a 32-seater bus of a pharmaceutical company was hit by boulders, killing one person and leaving four others injured. D. C.Namchi M. Bharani Kumar said on Thursday that the staff were going for their night shift when the bus were hit by boulders.
"Five people were injured among whom two had critical injuries. They were sent to STNM hospital. One of them died. The other was taken to Siliguri for treatment. The other three persons are undergoing treatment at Central Referral Hospital," said Kumar.
Officials in Mangan District said all the necessary actions had been initiated, restoration work had started. It would take at least three days to complete the restoration work. The movement of traffic and pedestrians would remain suspended beyond Chungthang until further notice.
A fresh notification from the Sub-Divisional Police Officer Chungthang of Mangan district said: "Road stretches on Chunghtang- Lachung and Chunghthang -Lachen axis in North Sikkim are damaged due to flash flood at many locations. On Chunghtang- Lachung Road, the BPO bridge is damaged. Water is flowing on the road, causing breaches. No kind of traffic or pedestrian movement is possible for three days approximately. At 6.2km on Chunghthang -Lachen Road, the road is breaching continuously. The movement of pedestrians and vehicles is not possible and is unsafe."
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha Labour Front president Premraj Gurung was quick to reach the accident spot at Mamring. He had a talk with executives of the pharmaceutical and took stock of the situation.
