Darjeeling: A lit up Capitol Tower draws crowd

Vivek Chhetri | TT | Darjeeling | 20.06.22 : One of Darjeeling’s famed landmarks, the Capitol Tower at the Darjeeling municipality building, was lit up on Sunday evening.
The tower also has a turret clock set up in the 1920s. The tower is 75-foot-high and the diameter of the clock is seven feet.
Once the tower was lit up, many tourists and locals gathered to admire it.
The tower had never been lit up before.
The illumination is the initiative of the new civic board led by Hamro Party. It had also repaired the clock a month ago.
The clock had been functional on and off all these decades. In 2006, the Rotary Club of Darjeeling played an instrumental role in repairing the Capitol clock after it stopped working in the 1980s. Since then, however, the clock “didn’t work for long stretches owing to civic apathy” said a resident.
“But now the clock is working and the lit-up tower looks great. We hope this continues,” said the resident.
The Darjeeling municipality came up in 1850.
