Man held with hidden in his briefs: Howrah resident, Ami Shaw arrested

SNS, SILIGURI, 3 APRIL 2022 : The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized gold bars worth more than Rs 1 core and arrested one person in this connection. The man had been hiding the yellow metal bars in his undergarments, sources said.
Acting on secret intelligence reports, the DRI apprehended a Howrah resident, Ami Shaw, from a private bus coming from Malda at Shiv Mandir on Asian Highway-II in Siliguri at 3.30 pm yesterday.
"The description given about the person matched, and accordingly, as he was apprehended for quizzing, he started giving contradictory statements. The DRI officials took him to their office. They found 20 pieces of yellow metal in his possession, each weighing 156 gm. The estimated value is Rs 1,71,87, 640. The seized gold is of foreign origin with markings inscribed on them. An investigation has been started," said the lawyer representing DRI, Ratan Banik.
The gold bars came from Myanmar through India' s land border with the country. sources said.
The sleuths suspected the 31-year-old had tried to mislead them as after procuring the gold, he had travelled towards Malda and had taken a bus to Siliguri.
The gold bars weigh 3.320 kilograms.
Sources said the gold was concealed in four briefs that he wore under the trousers.
"He was wearing four brief; under his trousers and had hidden the bars there, which were stitched and wrapped with adhesive tapes. The plan to hide the gold was innovative, but finally it did not work," a source said.
The DRI and Customs Department, Fulbari, had jointly nabbed a 53 -year- old Manipur resident in December last year. He had allegedly hidden the yellow metal in his rectum.
"It is common that the accused persons hide the gold in specially made waist belts and shoes. The persons carrying the gold keep changing this," an officer said.
