Louder chant for district court: demanded a district status for Alipurduar

Since March 21, lawyers here launched a pen-down and are not working in their professional capacities

TT Correspondent   |   Alipurduar   |    01.04.22  : Members of an organisation that had successfully demanded a district status for Alipurduar and the local bar association have stepped up their demand for a court of the district and sessions judge here.

To press their demand, the two organisations have decided not to allow anybody, including the judges and the employees, to enter any of the other courts here from Friday.

“We want the district and sessions judge’s court set up in Alipurduar that was declared a district in 2014. Unless our demand is met, we won’t allow anyone to enter the other courts here,” said Prasanta Narayan Majumder, the chairman of Alipurduar Purnango Zilla Dabi Aday Mancha.

As of now, there are 12 different courts in Alipurduar. But without a district and sessions court in the district, lawyers and litigants have to go to the district and sessions court in Jalpaiguri, around 100km away.

Since March 21, lawyers here launched a pen-down and are not working in their professional capacities.

Thursday was the 11th day of the strike.

“Tomorrow (Friday) and again on Monday, we will hold a rally under the banner of the Mancha in Alipurduar town. On Tuesday, such rallies would be held in different places across the district. Our movement will continue unless we get a specific assurance in writing from appropriate quarters,” added Majumder, who is also a lawyer by profession.
