SNS, SILIGURI, 8 APRIL 2022 : One of the three kangaroos rescued in areas near Siliguri recently has died, forest officials said today. The mammals had been housed in an open enclosure at Bengal Safari: North Bengal Wild Animal Park on the outskirts of Siliguri. The director of the park, Dawa Sangmu Sherpa, confirmed that the animal had died today.
"Three joeys were dehydrated and in a stage of recovery. But one of them, Lucas, was traumatised more. It had symptoms of chronic myopathy. We had kept them in quarantine under observation and ensured that they were not disturbed. Lucas died at around 9.30 am, and all our efforts to save him failed," Ms Sherpa said.
A post-mortem of the caracass was conducted today, forest officials said. The three kangaroos were rescued from two separate locations near the Baikunthapur forest before they could be smuggled out on 1 April night.
The next day, the carcass of another kangaroo was also found in a nearby area. The animals were undergoing treatment at the hospital of the Safari parks, officials said, they were suffering from dehydration.
The safari park authorities had shifted the marsupials to an open enclosure, which is totally covered with the agronet.
