Eight arrested in raids to seize ammunition across Bengal

TT Bureau   |   Malda, Siliguri   |  31.03.22  : Police in Siliguri and Malda districts have seized several firearms and live cartridges during the ongoing special drive initiated by the police across Bengal.

After the Bogtui carnage in Birbhum, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed senior police officers to seize illegal firearms, crude bombs and other similar items to curb crime across the state. 

In Siliguri, a team of New Jalpaiguri police station have arrested Gopal Sarkar, a resident of Goalapatty, and seized a firearm and two rounds of live cartridges from him. Also, six persons were arrested from Shastrinagar after a firearm and one round of cartridge was seized from them.

In Malda, one firearm, 38 rounds of live cartridges and some items, suspected to make the ammunition, were recovered from a house under Chanchal police station. Santosh Karamakar, the house owner, has been arrested.

“It seems to be an illegal manufacturing unit of firearms and ammunition. We are probing the case and interrogating Santosh Karamakar, the house owner, who has been arrested,” said Suvendu Mandal, the sub-divisional police officer of Chanchal.
