TT Correspondent   |   Jalpaiguri   |   20.03.22 : One police officer riding a two-wheeler died in a highway crash on Saturday afternoon, his colleagues not ruling out foul play.

Assistant sub-inspector Gopal Roy, 57, who was posted in Kranti Phari under Malbazar subdivision, was going towards Moulani from Natun Hat on a two-wheeler along NH31, when a four-wheeler coming from the opposite direction rammed into him, said sources.

The driver of the car somehow lost control and veered towards the right to hit Roy’s vehicle. Roy fell on the ground with severe head injuries.

Bystanders and police rushed Roy to Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital where the doctor declared him dead.

Subrata Gun, the officer-jn-charge of Kranti Phari, said Roy was going to investigate a case. “We are probing all angles related to Roy’s death,” he said.

Pressed for a clarification, Gun said as Roy was on his way to probe a sensitive case, they were not “ruling out foul play”.

However, the officer declined to give details of the case that Roy was going to investigate.

“The car has been seized but the driver has fled,” he added.

Roy hailed from Jaldhaka of Mainaguri and is survived by his wife and five children, including three daughters.

Getting the news of his death, his wife became unconscious with shock.

A relative said the woman was worried about how to sustain the family after Roy’s death.
