Siliguri cops seized drugs worth Rs 46.5 cr in 2021

SNS, SILIGURI, 31 JANUARY 2022 : In its bid to make Siliguri a 'drugs-free' town, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police (SMP) has seized a huge amount of contraband worth around Rs 46.5 crore and registered 191 cases against 330 persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, in the year 2021.

According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Detective Department, SMP, Rajen Chhetri, a special drive to make Siliguri drugs-free was successful in 2021 and the Siliguri Metropolitan Police seized different types of drugs worth Rs 46,49,81,803 last year. "We registered 191 cases against 330 persons under the NDPS Act last year," Mr Chhetri said here today.

According to SMP records, a total of 2014.52 kg of Ganja was seized from areas under the six police stations in Siliguri and its market value was estimated at Its 80.58 lakh. A total of 1215.4 kg of the Ganja was seized in areas under the NJP Police Station, while 111.98 kg of the total seizure was made in areas under the Siliguri Police Station.

On the other hand, heroine was seized front areas under two police stations—NJP and Siliguri.

A total of 818 grams of heroine was seized by the police, which has a market value of Rs 4.09 crore. Of the total amount, 518 grams of the contraband was seized from areas under NJP police said.

Police also seized 1881 grams of Brown Sugar from areas under the NJP Police Station in 2021. Both Bhaktinagar and Pradhannagar police stations seized 993 and 881 grams respectively. The Matigara Police Station seized 9.2 kg of Brown Sugar and Bagdogra police seized 3.251 kg. A total of 16.206 kg of Brown Sugar was seized in areas under the SMP in 2021, and its present market value is Rs 32.41 crore.

Police from the Pradhan-nagar police station seized 4 kg of Cocaine worth Rs 8 crore, and only the Bagdogra police station seized 1,1,13 kg of Opium worth Rs1.14 lath, police said.

Other items like tablets and capsules worth Rs 18.99 lakh, cough syrup and codeine phosphate worth Rs 91.74 lakh, Yaba tablets worth Its 6.72 lakh and contraband injection worth Rs 44,100 were also seized last year, police added.

Meanwhile, Siliguri Police seized 850 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 1.75 crore and arrested a resident of Malda, Abdul Rouf Biswas, from Panighatta More under the Bagdogra police station near Siliguri today, police said.
