Although nothing was apparently stolen, the burglars managed to enter some rooms belonging to home and health departments and two ATM counters housed in the complex.

Siva Prasad Yellasiri, the superintendent of police of Gangtok, said the thieves had entered nine or 10 rooms. “We have some clues and are working on them,” said

Yellasiri also said nothing had been stolen from the ro¬oms or the ATMs.

“We have registered a case under sections 457, 511 and 34 (of the Indian Penal Code),” he said.

The attempted burglary in a high security area has raised serious concerns among the people at large. The opposition Sikkim Democratic Front condemned the incident and demanded an inquiry under the supervision of the High Court of Sikkim.

Mentioning other incidents of crime in the state, including the murder of a doctor at the STNM Hospital, the SDF said the breakin betrayed total breakdown of law and order.

“If the Tashiling Secretariat, which is the centre of power, is not secure and safe from unwarranted incidents then one can imagine the overall security of the citizens of the state,” the party said in a media release.
